No grunting, this is my blog and I can post whatever I want. I need a grandma moment. We had our first snow today. Kind of. As I was loading Triniti and Tierni in the car this morning to take Triniti to school, Triniti all of a sudden got a huge smile on her face and said, "Look Grandma, it's snowing!". I was busy buckling Tierni in and told her I didn't think so. She told me to turn around and look and sure enough, it was! She was the happiest little girl all the way to school and told me she was going to make snow angels when she got home and then have some hot chocolate. No, I didn't have the heart to tell her it was just flurries and they ended soon. Her little smile was priceless. This is why I need to carry my camera around my neck! I better work on that.
First off I have to say, these pictures are BAD! I might even get kicked out of blog world over these bad pictures! Here's my excuse. For the past 3 days I have worked my butt heart out getting 5 Advent Calendars done before Dec.1 and yes, I did it! I wanted to post today and pulled these pictures out and well, you'll see, they're bad.
I know it's hard to tell but that is a shutter Greg replaced on someones house (if you are the old owner of this shutter, too bad). When Krissi moved to her new house I thought the girls needed a little something to hang their masterpieces on.
I painted one side of it with chalkboard paint.
Mod-podged paper to the other side and covered clothespins that I glued to it.
I cut out the letters and mod-podged them on and made some fabric flowers.
Hope you get the idea. I did one for Jalynn and I'll get better pictures of it to show you. By the way, do you notice the JoAnn's coupon hanging there? That's for me!
I get so excited when Greg replaces old wood windows. He always brings them home and lets me go through the trailer before he gets rid of them. I've never done anything Christmas using one and decided to this year. Here's what I came up with.
Remember the Christmas trees I painted along with me and the dog? There they are on the outside of the glass. I had a book I had finished reading and went to work on it.
First you fold a page halfway into a triangle. By the way, those are not my little fingers. I had help that day.
Then fold that triangle into the seam of the book.
And fold and fold and fold! I used a third of the book for each tree.
I quilted a Christmas tree fabric and appliqued Santa on it.
Framed the finished fabric piece behind the glass and glued my trees and wooden star on the outside. I know these pictures are bad. I couldn't find a good place in the house to take them.
It's bad. I think I've been to Hobby Lobby way too much. I walked in the door yesterday and the cashier waved and said, "Hi, Terri. What are you here for today?". She knew my name! It's not like they sell groceries and I could say I was there for just some milk or bread. Here's the truth and I did tell her when I checked out. I was there to get round pieces of wood so I could make these.
I found the cutest blog and so glad I did. It's Smile Monsters and she has such great ideas. These are reusable name tags. They have chalkboard on the back to write the names. I told you this was good! Thank you, Jo.
When I was checking out, the cashier told me to have a great Thanksgiving. Then she added, "Oh never mind, I'll see you again before then". I may end up in withdrawal, but I can surely last 3 days without going back.
Here's one of the first things on my "Things to make for family for Christmas to do List". For safety sake, we'll just call it "My to do List". Kimbo at A Girl and a Glue Gun is pure genius. She came up with this:
Could that be any cuter? It's a stuffed animal turned scarf! I tell you, pure genius.
Now family.....who do you think is getting one of these????
It's not such a great idea to spray paint something outside when it's very windy! I had 3 Christmas trees that I made out of an old paperback book that needed a little green on them. It was warm today so me and all my brilliance took them out to the patio to paint them. Yes, they're painted and look great, but so am I and the dog's head. We're all a lovely Christmas green. I'll show you what I'm doing with them next week when I get it done.
Now I have an important announcement. Everyone needs to hurry on over to Hobby Lobby because I was there the other day and this ornament was 50% off.
I love it! I have a figurine that I've had for years with Santa kneeling to Baby Jesus and it has always been my favorite of all my decorations. I couldn't pass the ornament up. Anyway, 50% off. Head on over to your nearest Hobby Lobby and while you're there, could you pick me up a few things?
Tierni is 3 today! Happy Birthday little dolly. Papa and I love you!
Okay, now for the yogurt. If you didn't read yesterday's post you have no idea what I'm talking about. Shame on you. What do you think this is?
Wrong. It is not a yogurt container. It's a snowman!
This was my first trial and error one. Look, his armpit is sweating and his nose is running. I've got lots more to make and they won't have those drippage (is that a word?) problems. I might even try to do my first tutorial with the next one. I just have to remember to take pictures as I go.
It's official and probably unamerican but I hate the big store that starts with a W! Look, I'm even afraid to say the name, but you know who I mean. I don't know what these people were thinking when they decided to move the whole store around before Christmas and expect you to know where things are! I went in there today to buy toys and searched everywhere for the toy department. I finally was frustrated and ask someone and she told me in a not so nice voice, "It's by the garden center". Really? Why didn't I think of that??? What happened? The powers that be got drunk one night and thought it would be funny to move things around to watch us all walk around and look stupid? By the way, I told the "not so nice" lady that I was going to go home and blog about this. Then I left before she could call for security! It would have been nice if I could have found the doors faster, but I got lost again.
Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better. Tomorrow I'll show you what I did with yogurt containers!
Looks pretty bad, huh? My mom and I made these out of felt when I was little. I've hung onto it all these years because I was always going to make a new one. I finally did.
I made this one out of fabric, though. I'm making a few more and going to change the color of the words to gold. After I had finished this I was going to throw the old one away. I couldn't do it. I just packed it back up in its ziploc bag and put it on a shelf.
I love Thanksgiving and Christmas! To me, Christmas starts on Thanksgiving Day and the whole next month is just magical. When my children were all little we would start putting the Christmas tree and all the decorations up on Thanksgiving night while watching and singing to Mary Poppins or The Sound of Music. One of those two movies are always on that evening and I'll be honest, I was the one singing. They played along with me and pretended to watch it.
Sometime during the middle of the night I woke up and thought I should make something using sheet music. I really wish these ideas would let me sleep and come to me when I'm awake. So this morning I found a frame and the music to O Christmas Tree. Now I needed a little tree. Found the fabric, started cutting and sewing and here's what I came up with.
I took some of my coffee I was drinking and stained the page before I framed it.
I know I really don't need any more crap decorations sitting around, but I sure love making it!
One day last week (when it was still warm), Tierni and I were on our way home from dropping Triniti off at school and this little voice in the back seat said, "Grandma, I have a plan. Let's go to a sale garage". Okay, that was just too cute not to find her a garage sale. We found one and guess what? I scored!!!
I know! Three whole bags of zippers for $1.00. The possibilities are endless! When we got home, I remembered something I had found in the back of Brandon's closet when he moved out and I was changing his old room into a craft room.
He had these when he was in grade school. I think they're called pongs or maybe pings or pods or whatever. Anyway, finders - keepers. (Brandon, if you are reading this, I'll be happy to give them back to you. Well, maybe some of them). Right now, I'm kind of busy making them into zipper necklaces.
I put Triple Thick Glaze (love that stuff) and then hot glued it to the zipper pull.
I can't wait to make more necklaces, key chains, back pack charms..... I'll post it when I do.
Oh yeah, while we were at the "sale garage", we did find Cinderella and Snow White for a quarter.
And she's holding her Toy Story 3 coloring book. All in all, it was a great day!
Probably around 30 years ago when I was doing a lot of craft shows, I made and sold applique that I framed in wooden embroidery hoops. Just like everything else, that fad made it's way out and now is back again. Kind of like the peace sign. I'm just waiting for Jalynn and Jordyn to show up here with love beads! Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about, any girl reading this over 45 had to have had a ton of love beads to match every outfit! Okay, back to the hoop. I searched this house everywhere for the pattern I had for a 3-d Christmas tree, no luck finding it. Then one day when I was cleaning out a closet upstairs, I found an old hoop that I had done. That's odd because I never really had anything that I made, I either sold it or gave it away. I took it apart and changed a few things and this time it turned out even better (if I say so myself). Anyway, here it is.
Here was my dilemma, I never could find my cell phone when it was ringing. It really wasn't that I couldn't find it, it just never was in the room where I was at the time. When I was working it was always right at my desk where I was. Now that I'm home all day, it has taken on a life of it's own and moves around from room to room and it always goes to the room I'm not in. It's just mean like that and I decided it was not going to get the best of me, so I made a cell phone holder that I wear around my neck. Greg thought I had finally lost it but when everybody thought it was a great idea (yes, I wore it in public), he's on my bandwagon now. I decided to start making them for my Etsy store and added a wristlet to it. We'll see how it goes. If they don't sell, you know what everybody is getting for Christmas!
See you tomorrow. I can't wait to show you the Christmas hoop I made this week-end. I know, that was a shameless plea to get you to come back.
I have to start by thanking Kelsey of Kreated by Kelsey for all her help in getting my pictures loaded on to Etsy. I was so frustrated and e-mailed her and she was so kind to look at my pictures and help me figure out what I was doing wrong. She is a designer that does custom blogs. Go check her out, she's awesome! Thanks again, Kelsey.
I was on the Childmade blog this week-end and saw the cutest little sheep made out of a magnetic clip. You better believe I will be making a few of those. They would make great Christmas gifts for teachers! Click on the link above and you'll see the picture and tutorial. I tried to get the picture to put on here, but I couldn't get it loaded. Oh, Kelsey........
Okay, since I obviously am going to have more than one of these, I guess I should add a gadget on my sidebar for just the Hall of Shame. Hey, look at me talking blog talk! I don't have any pictures, because frankly, I was just too embarrassed to even take a picture. This was bad! I saw a recipe on one of the blogs I look at and I'm so sorry I don't remember whose it was. I really want to give credit to her. She made cookies with just 2 ingredients and then added chocolate chips. It was a spice cake mix and canned pumpkin that you mix together and then add the chocolate chips. They were awesome. Greg told me to make them again, but this time add raisins instead. That would probably have been even better, but I decided to use apple pie filling instead of pumpkin and then just bake them. I watch the cooking channel way to much when I'm sewing and now suddenly I think I'm Paula Deen. What was I thinking! They were horrible!!! First they didn't bake right, but I thought I could live with that and decided to taste it. Follow me here, spice cake, apples, what could go wrong? They were terrible! The rest of the dough and the first batch of cookies went in the trash. I'm done baking, back to crafting.
I'm sorry I don't have anything crafty to show you today. I've got a mess to clean up. Remember this sweet little scarecrow sitting on her Papa's lap looking all innocent?
Well, look what that innocent little face did today!
Yep, that's my piano with pink permanent marker going across every key! I thought she was being so cute with a drum, flute and cow bell at the piano playing and singing while I was in the kitchen. She even came in and ask me if I liked Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and then went and sang and played (kind of) it for me. Oh, and she must have been getting a lot of tips because she had almost all of the slot machine coins lined up there, also.
By the way, if anyone from Kohler is reading this. I love my piano, but it needs tuning really bad! Just a thought.
Triniti was out of school last Thursday, Friday, and Monday. Normally I go over to Krissi's house, get Triniti off to school and then Tierni and I come back here. But since Triniti didn't have school, Krissi brought the girls over here in the morning. Which gave us a lot of play time! While she was eating breakfast one morning, she told me she was going to be a Barbie fashion designer when she grew up. I told her that was great (not knowing what was going to come next). She got paper and the markers and drew this:
She told me that I would be her sewer and I should go back right now and make that dress! Okay, now what do I do!
My Grandma Gerken would always make all of us cousins Barbie clothes for Christmas. I'm talking a whole shoebox full of clothes! And get this, they had buttons, zippers, and all the trimmings.
Back to my problem. I thought to myself as I walked back to the sewing room, "Please Grandma, help me out here". We went in and this is what we came out with:
My little futile attempt at Barbie clothes. Trin was thrilled! She told me I made it just like she designed it! I know, look at the hair! That was fixed for the photo. You know how these designers are.
I hope somewhere in Heaven, Grandma is looking down on me and proud of what I did. Truth be told, she and Mom are probably cracking up over it! I'll get better, Grandma, I promise.
I know you have been waiting all day to see these. So here you go! Let me start first by saying that there is one little princess I know who is getting very creative. Look where she put her spider ring.
On her okra ghost! Good job, Jordyn.
The witch and the SWAT Team guy.
Look what troopers Josh and Jennifer were:
I'm hoping you two kept those on after you left. Oh and by the way, this was the first year Jalynn went trick or treating with her friends and not the family. I thought Jennifer handled it very well. Except for the time she was caught yelling out the window to the people in the street to enjoy their children now because tomorrow they will be gone and not trick or treat with them ever again. Once we got her away from the door and window, she was fine.
Triniti, the Vampiress!
Our little scarecrow.
We were thrilled when Austin and Ryan showed up! The football player in the middle is their friend.
Krissi and Triniti. Sorry for the red eyes, girls. Thought I got rid of them in Photobucket.
Brandon, checking the candy out for the girls. Good job, Uncle Brandon! (you should be wearing a necklace like the rest of us)
Here are the last two pictures and my favorites. Papa and his girls.
I love this picture! That is so Jordyn and Papa. When those two are together that is always where she is, by his side and under his arm.
And last, but not least, these two are completely worn out. If you're wondering what they are looking up at, it's the football game that was on.
Papa and I love you all! Thank you for a great time!
See you all tomorrow. It is November 1st and I've got to start Christmas crafting.
I would love it if you see something I’ve done and want to make one for yourself or give as a gift, but not to sell. Please link back and give credit where credit is due. I would like to see what you’ve done to make it your own (improved the idea). Thanks for visiting!
