Just Beachy

So you know how you get a wild hair one day and decide to clean out all the kitchen cabinets and you find that you actually have 6 little wooden cutting boards? Then right in the middle of everything you stop what you're doing and go up to the craft room with them instead of just throwing them out?

 

Yep, that would be me. Oh, and then your husband comes home from work and finds the whole kitchen unpacked and you tell him you've been slaving in there all day. Yep, did that too!

 

 

 

I couldn't bring myself to throwing away perfectly good pieces of wood.

 

 

 

I took one and painted it first and then mod-podged sand scrapbook paper to it.

 

 

 

I just love those barefoot wine corks that a friend saves for me so I glued them around the edge and added the Scrabble tiles.

 

 

 

To hang it, I glued jute to the back. Cheapo way, but it works!

Charmed Ponytail Holder

This is one of those things like the Pet Rock (remember those?). You know, those little things in stores that someone is making money on and you look at the price and say, "Are you freakin' kidding me?". Yeah, that type of thing.

 

So I was at the Mall before school started and walked into a specialty shop that all the girls love and they were selling those for $4.99 a piece. That's right, $4.99 for not two, or three, but for one!!

 

 

 

Here's the funny thing, right next to where they were hanging were these plain ponytail holders for $2.99 in all those bright colors. 36 of them for $2.99!

 

Guess who spent $2.99!

 

 

 

All you have to do is grab a jump ring and put a charm on it. That's it, simple as that!

 

 

 

Kind of a "no brainer", huh?

 

 

T-shirt Ruffle Dress

I probably should have done this in the Spring, but it's still hot here, so it's still wearable.

 

I love this time of year when you can pick up little t-shirts on the clearance rack for little or nothing.

Ignore the flip flops, the girls were in a mood that day and I was lucky to get the dresses on them!

 

 

 

I found these yellow t-shirts at Wal-Mart in both their sizes for $1.00.

 

 

 

Now I don't have exact measurements for anything I did because I just winged it, but at least you'll get the general idea. Each size would be different anyway.

 

I started by putting the shirts on the girls and measured how much I would need to add to the bottom of the shirt for dress length. I actually measured from the armpit down and after I cut the shirt, subtracted that my my measurement.

 

 

 

I knew I wanted a 3" ruffle on the bottom, so subtract that 3" and that's how long the center piece was. For the width, I measured the bottom of the shirt and made it 1 1/2 times wider.

Sew the center seam.

 

 

 

The ruffle was 2 times wider. I cut it 7" so I could fold it over with a 1/2" seam allowance.

Sew your seam and fold and iron.

 

 

 

Baste and gather the raw edges of the ruffle and pin to the bottom of the skirt.

 

 

 

Sew the ruffle to the skirt and then topstitch.

 

 

 

Gather and sew the whole middle piece now to the bottom of the t-shirt and topstitch.

 

 

 

At this point I was doing the happy dance and loved the way it turned out. BUT when I tried Tierni's on, it was too short!! Goodbye happy dance.

 

 

 

I went back to the drawing board and cut another ruffle, this time I cut it 14" so when folded would be 7". I sewed this on the same seam as the first ruffle and added ribbon to cover the outside stitches.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I'm sorry these instructions were clear as mud, but I hope you got some kind of idea of how I did it!

 

  

Man Cave Sign

When we moved my craft room upstairs last winter, it left an empty room that was now being used to store junk. You know, a "catch all" room. For some unknown reason (out of the blue), Greg decided this was going to be his new Man Cave. Yeah, that's really not what I had in mind, but okay.

 

He made it very clear that there was nothing girly or crafty going in there. I'll go along with the girly part, but crafty? I'm trying to sneak a few things in and this sign was the first to make it to a wall.

 

 

 

I had those cheapo pieces of wood stuck back and painted them white first and then dry brushed on the tan so it would give it that washed out look.

 

 

 

I cut the words out on contact paper using the Cameo and painted them brown.

 

 

 

After it dries completely, peel the paper off.

 

 

 

To hang it, I glued jute to the back of all the pieces.

 

 

 

He doesn't know it yet, but I'm working on pillows and a window valance as we speak!

Super Saturday

Okay, let's all play along and pretend it's not really Sunday and that I completely blew off posting yesterday. Greg was off yesterday and we spent the day looking at new kitchen sinks. Stop laughing, we really did! The sad thing is we came home with paint, a new bar buffet, new light switches...basically everything but the kitchen sink!!

Hair Twisters

When my friend and I went to a craft show last weekend, there was a booth that everyone was running to. They were selling Hair Twisters.

 

I had never seen them before, have you? The girls there were absolutely grabbing them up! I knew I had to try and make some, so when we got home, I made a trip to Hobby Lobby for polymer clay.

 

 

 

The hardest part was getting the clay soft enough to work with. Then I started rolling and rolling until it was the size I wanted. That piece was probably 2 feet long (or maybe a little longer).

 

 

 

I wanted to add a charm, so I made a loop at one end.

 

 

 

Use a pencil and start coiling the clay around it. It's kind of tricky getting the pencil back out, but work with it slowly and it will come out.

 

 

 

Then bake in a 300 degree oven for 10 minutes and let cool.

 

 

 

Now you can add charms or beads if you want.

 

 

 

To put it in your hair, grab a section of hair and start twisting it around. It stays in perfectly! If it starts to slip, you need to grab a bigger section of hair.

 

 

 

 

 

I can't wait for Jordyn to see them this weekend, they'll be so cute in her long hair!
